Quick Update

Some of you may know that Myles was admitted to the hospital yesterday. After 5 days of antibiotics and inhalers his pneumonia was just getting worse. So yesterday we took him back to the doctor's who decided to admit him so that he could do a more aggresive treatment. When we got to Timpanogos Hospital his fever was 105 degrees (even with tylenol in his system) and his oxygen was dangerously low. So they started an IV with fluids and antibiotics, put him on oxygen, and took chest x-rays. In about 4 hours he perked right up and seemed to feel a lot better and we hoped he would be able to go home today. But last night his fever spiked again (103) and this morning when his chest x-rays came back his lungs looked worse than the doctor expected. The doctor said it was not the worst case of childhood pneumonia he has seen, but it was pretty bad.

Today he went from feeling pretty lethargic in the morning to actually being able to walk the halls in his little hospital gown with his bum hanging out and pulling along his IV this afternoon. He ate some dinner after not eating for a few days, and he hasn't had a fever since this morning. So I am optimistic that he will be able to go home tomorrow. He still has a pretty bad cough but it is less frequent and the spasms don't last as long. I'm not looking forward to another night in that hospital bed with him, but it is so much better than bringing him home before he is ready. Tomorrow morning they will take more chest x-rays and if it looks like his lungs are significantly cleared up, if his blood tests all come back clean (no infections in his blood), if he is able to drink more (so far he won't drink more than a sip occasionally), and if he doesn't spike a fever tonight, it looks like we will be able to come home tomorrow.

Way back in October Marshall and I booked a cruise through the Bahamas for next week. The doctor says he would be very surprised if Myles wasn't almost completely better by Saturday, but Marshall and I are a little concerned. At this point the cruise and airline tickets are almost completely non-refundable but there is no way we are going unless Myles is feeling a million times better. So. . .keep your fingers crossed for many reasons!

wow Melissa! Tell the little guy to feel better... It's so hard to see your kids sick - and I can't even imagine having to stay in the hospital with them. Good luck and our prayers are with you.

PS - love that you can post from your iPhone

I am thinking about you guys today. I hope everything turns out fine and you get to decompress in the caribbean while the kids play happily and heathily at home.
