Halloween Party at Mommy's Work

Last night my work had a halloween party and we had a great time. Mason dressed up as a lion and had a great time (see the pictures below). He didn't quite get the trick-or-treating part, but he had a fun time crawling all over a pumpkin and playing in the pumpkin guts (that is, until Mommy made him stop putting pumpkin seeds in his mouth). He was a hit and everyone thought he was adorable. Mason has been sleeping a lot better lately. The last two nights he has slept all the way through the night, no problems. So we really hope that continues.

Getting Better

Okay, last night wasn't quite so bad. Mason only woke up once and we just put his pacifier in and he went right back to sleep. I think the next step is to not give him his pacifier back in the middle of the night, but we're worried about how that will affect our sleep. Mason was really cute last night in Santaquin. He played tag with his cousin Joseph. Joseph would yell "come get me Mason" and Mason would crawl as fast as he could to where Joseph was, until right when he got there and Joseph would jump to the other side of the room. It wore Mason out and he slept most of the way home.

What a crazy kid!

That Mason is starting to cause his mommy and daddy major problems. He hasn't slept through the night for days now, and I don't think it is because he is sick. He is perfectly happy all day, goes to bed well around 8-8:30, but he wakes up between 2-4 AM and cries and cries. We read that they go through separation anxiety at this age, and that if we get in the habit of picking him up when he wakes up in the middle of the night, everytime he wakes up at night he'll cry for us. So usually we let him cry for about 5 minutes and if he doesn't stop we go in and put his pacifier in. About 1/2 the time he goes right back to sleep, the other 1/2 we have to go in again in a few minutes and repeat. But last night was a different story. He woke up around 4 and Marshall went in, put his pacifier in, but he would't stop crying. So he picked him up, and the second he did Mason stopped crying and fell asleep in his arms. But as soon as Marshall started lowering him into the crib...

The Big Hike!

Today Marshall took Mason on a long hike in the Provo Canyon. Mason was a trooper, even though it was hard being carried by daddy up the big mountain. They saw snakes and chipmunks, and beautiful Fall colors. Here are some pictures from their hike, and then some from Canadian Thanksgiving last week.

Feeling Great!

Mason is finally feeling really good. He's been the cutest kid lately (okay, he's been the cutest since he was born). Yesterday when I picked him up I put him in the living room while I cut up vegitables for dinner. While I was watching him, he crawled all the way across the room, to the stairs, up all the stairs with NO help (just some spotting in case he fell), and all the way through his bathroom to the tub where he pulled up and finally started whining when he couldn't reach his rubber duckie. I was amazed! He is truly mobile and we really have to watch him now. This morning Marshall had to go to work early to fix a server, so I fed Mason breakfast. He refused to eat his oatmeal with pears and cinnamon. Everytime I would come near his mouth he would whip his head around to the back of the highchair until I took the spoon away, and then he'd look at me and laugh. Finally I decided I didn't want to play his game anymore, so I went and got my oatmeal to eat....

Mason's Latest Dr's Visit--Finally Some Good News

I took Mason to the doctor's today and his ear infection looks cleared up, so he didn't have to get another shot (would have been his 7th in 10 days). He still has lots of fluid in his ear, which means that it is more likely that he will get another ear infection, though. The doctor said that because he hasn't been able to get rid of the fluid in his ears, and because both Marshall and I had chronic ear infections when we were young, if he gets one more ear infection in the next month he will refer us to an ENT and likely put tubes in his ears. I hope it doesn't come to that, but I more hope that he doesn't get another ear infection. Last night Mason fell asleep easily at about 8:30 PM and slept all night. In fact, this morning Marshall turned off our alarm at 6 AM and we slept in until almost 7 (oops)! So I think he is feeling a lot better. We had to wait quite a while for the doctor today (we could hear the 5 year old in the next room kicking and screaming to g...

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

We had a busy weekend with Mason's grandma and grandpa Goates in town. Friday they got to my house at about 3 and were surprised to see Jessica there with Mason. Mason had a rough day, but his fever broke around noon Friday and he started feeling better. He loved showing grandma and grandpa all the fun things he can do. Saturday, we took Mason back to the doctor's for another antibiotic shot. After we saw the doctor and told him that we thought his stomach flu was gone, we were waiting for the nurse to give him his shot. Marshall was holding him, and all of a sudden, Mason gurgles and spits up a little. I turned around to get some kleenex and just then Mason threw up all over himself, Marshall, and the office. It was so gross, but Mason didn't seem to mind at all. He was mad that we wouldn't let him keep playing! Anyway, after Marshall went home to change Mason seemed to be feeling okay, so Marshall and Mason went with my dad and brother to Cabbella's while I...

Poor, poor little Mason

Poor poor little Mason! Last night he had a temperature of 102 and threw up all over Marshall, so I called the dr and she said that if his temperature didn't go down in the next hour to bring him in. His temperature kept rising and he kept whining (not quite crying, just expressing his discontent), so around 9:30 we took him in to the doctor's office. After the doctor checked him out I asked what to do about the fever and he said "that's the least of your worries." Turns out he has a cold, another ear infection, an inflamed throat, and a nasty stomach flu. And just in time for Grandma and Grandpa Goates to visit! They gave him a shot of antibiotics and we have to go back in on Saturday for another one. When we finally got him to sleep last night he slept all night. This morning when I went in he was just lying awake in his crib, but just lying still (usually he is crawling, pulling up on the bars, etc.). He still had a fever of 101 and he was starving. We fed him ...

Poor Little Mason

I think that if you just read this blog and didn't know anything about Mason before we started it you would think he is really sickly, but he really didn't get sick until about 7 months. He seemed fine last weekend after all his shots, but yeasterday when I picked him up from the babysitters she said that he was really fussy all day. He had slept a lot more than usual and when he was awake he just wanted to be held, and he was really hot all day. When I picked him up he slept for most of the evening and then all night. He had a temperature of about 100, but my books say not to really worry about that. This morning we finally had to wake him up at about 7:30 to get him ready for the day, but he seemed a little better. I just called the babysitters and she said he seems better. Whew! I was worried about him. I kind of think it is a combination of a reaction from the flu shot and a growth spurt, because he has been eating like crazy lately. He used to only eat about 1/3 of a cont...

Mason Stays Awake

Mason has been driving us a little nuts lately with his sleep habits lately. He had been sleeping through the night really well before he got sick, and then he started waking up a few times a night. Now he his feeling better, but his sleep patterns are totally off. Sunday night he woke up 3 or 4 times and cried until we came in and helped him get back to sleep. Then when I picked him up from the babysitters yesterday (monday) he fell asleep and slept from about 5:30-6:30 (usually his last nap is about 3:30, but I guess he needed an extra). So last night he was playing, playing, playing and did not want to go to bed. Finally at about 10 I put him in his crib with his pacifier, turned off the lights, and told him to go to bed. He kept whining and whining, and we would go in every few minutes. He would be standing in his crib with his arms hanging over the sides reaching for us when we walked in. Finally after about 45 minutes we decided enough was enough and he was just going to have to...

Mason's Dr's Appt and Weekend Update

Doctor's Appointment Mason had his 6 month check up (he's actually 7 months, but we're a little behind on the dr's appointments) on friday. The dr asked if he was sitting up yet (which he did at 5 months) and I said yeah, he's crawling. The dr didn't believe me until I put him down and he crawled across the room. Then he asked what the bruise was on his head, and I told the doctor that he hit it when he fell down from standing hanging on to the coffee table. Again, the doctor didn't believe me that he was pulling himself up until we demonstrated. I really think he'll be walking in a few months--he already walks around the coffee table hanging on. It is getting frustrating though. We used to be able to keep him from getting into anything on a couch or short table. Now magazines, drinks, remotes, phones on the tables and couches are in his mouth in an instant. He's quite a strong kid. The doctor looked inside Mason's ears and he still has some flu...
